Mary Montcalm

Recently retired from Gulf Breeze High School, Spanish instructor Mary Montcalm spent her career helping students grow into more informed, engaged citizens. Through her partnership with Gulf Coast Diplomacy, she played a key role in introducing international visitors to American education and values, while reinforcing the importance of those values here at home.

Montcalm regularly welcomed exchange students into her classroom, giving them a firsthand look at American high school life. In turn, her own students learned to appreciate the freedoms, opportunities, and responsibilities that come with living in the United States. “It gives our students perspective,” she said. “They start to see what makes our way of life special—and worth protecting.”

By encouraging students to use their language skills and share American culture with international peers, Montcalm fostered leadership, confidence, and curiosity. These exchanges not only enriched the classroom but also strengthened the local community by promoting understanding, respect, and civic pride.

Now retired, Montcalm continues to support educational outreach and has even considered volunteering abroad. Reflecting on her experience, she offered a simple endorsement of these programs: “Keep them coming.”
