Exchange Alumna Connects with Youth Diplomats

In December 2025, Youth Diplomats participated in a virtual exchange session with Emma Kruusmäe, an honorary citizen of Pensacola. Emma shared her academic journey and her experiences with local governance and civic life in Estonia. The session provided students with an opportunity to learn how young people in different countries engage with their communities through education, service, and dialogue.

Emma previously visited Northwest Florida in July 2022 as part of the American Leadership Exchange Program offered by the U.S. Department of State. During her visit, she explored leadership development, public speaking, project planning, American culture, and the region’s local strengths.

During the December session, Emma reflected on her time in Pensacola and discussed how civic institutions function in Estonia at the local level. Youth Diplomats engaged in facilitated discussion and scenario-based activities that encouraged critical thinking about community needs in Northwest Florida, such as transportation access and public spaces, through a learning-focused lens.

The conversation emphasized comparative perspectives on civic life and the role of education, service, and community involvement. Students asked questions and shared reflections during a moderated Q&A session.

Ongoing alumni engagement supports the educational goals of exchange programs by encouraging dialogue, reflection, and global awareness. Youth Diplomats shared that meeting Emma broadened their understanding of international perspectives, cultural context, and the ways communities around the world approach civic life.
