Youth Exchanges: Learning Through International Exchange
Since 2011, Gulf Coast Diplomacy has hosted youth exchange programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, beginning with the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP) and later including participants from Latin America, Europe, Africa, and other regions.
Over the years, we have welcomed youth participants from countries including Argentina, the Bahamas, Belize, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, France, Guyana, Honduras, Iraq, Jamaica, Malawi, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Ukraine, and Venezuela.
Many of these programs fall under the Youth Ambassadors framework and share several core characteristics:
-
Programs are short-term, typically one to two weeks in Northwest Florida.
-
Visiting youth stay with local host families.
-
Programming emphasizes cultural exchange, shared learning, and facilitated dialogue.
These exchanges also create learning opportunities for local high school students. By engaging with international peers, students gain exposure to global perspectives and explore how young people in different countries approach education, community life, and shared challenges. Sessions emphasize communication, cultural understanding, and reflection through educational activities.
Youth exchanges provide structured opportunities for dialogue and intercultural learning that support broader educational goals. They encourage curiosity, broaden perspectives, and strengthen understanding across cultures.
In 2021, Gulf Coast Diplomacy expanded its youth exchange efforts through virtual programming, allowing students to connect across borders through online platforms. Today, we continue to host in-person exchanges while incorporating virtual and hybrid engagement when appropriate.
Information about upcoming youth exchange programs is shared on our website and through official communication channels as opportunities become available.
