As a Youth Diplomat, I had the opportunity to shadow the Pensacola portion of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) titled Young Leaders RISE – Renew, Inspire, Serve, and Engage and to interact with the dynamic group of visitors in our hometown of Pensacola, Florida. They connected with local leaders, business officials, and non-profit representatives across the city, on this IVLP, which focused on themes of civic engagement and services to the public. The IVLP fosters meaningful, international connections between U.S. local citizens, myself included, and up-and-coming leaders from around the world, offering a rare opportunity for global interaction.
Throughout the program, I shadowed the group as they explored key community institutions that highlighted the American values of democracy, leadership, and public service. Visits at HERicane Pensacola and Big Brothers and Sisters provided them with a unique insider perspective on how local organizations empower their residents through community leadership and resilience. Meeting with officials from Pensacola City Hall and the local election office offered firsthand insights into the structure and function of the United States’ government and electoral process. Visiting local, historic venues and restaurants provided a glimpse into American culture, both through the rustic atmosphere of the surrounding areas and through the rich conversations between University of West Florida leaders, local citizens, and the IVLP participants. Most importantly, launching the “Faces of Service” campaign with our Youth Diplomats from Gulf Coast Diplomacy demonstrated to the international visitors the spirit of unity and duty to community service that defines our nation.
In essence, this IVLP emphasized the power of mutual understanding, cross-cultural engagement, and civic responsibility. It was a rewarding experience that deepened my understanding of how essential international exchange is to spark strong partnerships, both locally and globally.
