In May 2024, Olivia, a former Youth Diplomat and current undergraduate student at Georgetown University, had the opportunity to present at the VIII International Scientific-Practical Conference on Language and Literature in Modern Poly-Cultural Societies, a virtual event attended by scholars from around the world. This opportunity came through an ongoing relationship she developed in 2022 with Tetiana, an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumna, who invited her to speak based on the connections made during a Youth Diplomats’ program exchange.
Olivia’s presentation focused on private higher education in Washington, D.C., providing her a platform to showcase her research to an international audience and gain experience presenting complex ideas in a global academic setting. While Olivia was the only American undergraduate in the room, she stood out as an example of American academic rigor and the professional skills developed through U.S. exchange programs.
For Olivia, this experience wasn’t just an academic exercise—it was an essential step in her professional development. Presenting at this international conference allowed her to build her global network, establish herself in the global academic community, and strengthen skills that will serve her in her career. Engaging with international peers and academics enhances intercultural communication, an increasingly valuable skill in today’s global workforce. Her participation also directly supports America’s competitive edge, as she represented U.S. educational excellence abroad.
This collaboration, which started in Youth Diplomats, underscores the workforce development role of exchanges. Students like Olivia are not only prepared for their academic futures but also equipped to contribute to U.S. foreign policy, international relations, and global education. By participating in global conversations, Olivia—and others like her—foster connections that can lead to future professional collaborations, jobs, and a better understanding of U.S. values and principles in differing cultural contexts.
Programs like Youth Diplomats and the IVLP actively contribute to America’s global influence, ensuring that the U.S. remains an economic and diplomatic leader. For American taxpayers, these exchanges provide valuable returns by creating skilled, globally aware professionals who represent U.S. interests and support America’s role as a stable, strong, and respected leader in the world.
