For the last few years, Gulf Coast Diplomacy has been honored to host virtual and in-person projects for the United Kingdom with the International Visitor Leadership Program titled Youth Empowerment and Civic Activism.
To introduce a recent in-person group to locals, we first brought them to a community coffee where they could meet with community members, including young professionals and teenagers. At the event, locals and exchange participants had engaging conversations about what the younger generation hopes to do in the future.
At Pensacola City Hall, Council Executive Don Kraher greeted the group and shared local history and demographics. Kelsey Powell joined the discussion and highlighted the Pensacola Youth Council and teens’ work in the community.
A meeting with Council Member Teniadé Broughton offered insight into Pensacola’s multicultural history. She spoke about her commitment to preserving and honoring Pensacola’s history and promoting civil rights.
A discussion with Vice President Krissy Smith of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida highlighted that organization’s mentorship program and how it helps youth learn about ethics and civic engagement. The discussion also included how members of the community can become volunteer mentors.
The group also met with Carol and Jerry McIntosh of Movement of Change to further their understanding of Pensacola youth engagement programs. Conversations revolved around efforts to improve the disparities in education, the interaction with law enforcement, and the encouragement of voting. They also showcased how their civil rights work helped youth become more engaged in their communities.
The visitors experienced the culture of Pensacola in many exciting ways, including a dolphin cruise and a relaxing outing to beautiful Pensacola Beach. They also joined Ocean Hour to volunteer with their team at a beach clean-up on Pensacola Beach along our very own Youth Diplomats.
This visit was made possible by the U.S. Department of State. Meridian International Center administered the national program, and Gulf Coast Diplomacy created the local project.
